This section
of the magazine it’s about a sports call Basketball, but before of that we
wanna talk about the meaning of sport; sports are an activity involving
physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and
often undertaken competitively. Often sports such activities considered as a
group. The history of basketball began with it’s invention in 1891 in
Springfield, Massachusetts by a Canadian physical education instructor James
Naismith. After basketball became established in American college, the
profesional game followed; the American National Basketball Asociation (NBA),
established in 1949.
Basketball is
a sport played by two teams of five
players on a rectangular court.
The only
essential equipment in a basketball game is the ball and the court: a flat,
rectangular surface with baskets at opposite ends. Competitive levels require
the use of more equipment such as clocks, score sheets and scoreboard. As well as many techniques for
shooting, passing, dribbling and rebounding, basketball teams generally
have player positions and offensive and
defensive structures. Popular positión includes:
1. Point guard : usually the fastest player on the team, organizes the
team's offense.
2. Shooting guard : creates a high volume of shots on offense, mainly
long-ranged; and guards the opponent's best perimeter player on defense.
3. Small forward: often primarily responsible for scoring points via cuts to
the basket and dribble penetration; on defense seeks rebounds and steals.
4. Power forward: plays offensively often with their
back to the basket; on defense, plays under the basket (in a zone defense) or
against the opposing power forward (in man-to-man defense).
5. Center: uses height and size to score (on
offense), to protect the basket closely (on defense), or to rebound.
In
basketball there were only thirteen rules, we show 2 of them:
·
The
ball must be held in or between the hands, the arms or body must not be used
for holding it.
·
A
goal shall be made when the ball is thrown or batted from grounds into the
basket and stays there if the ball rests on the edge and the opponent moves the
basket it shall count as a goal.
Competition is essential to sport as a
good motivator; it pushes each individual to strive for his/her best. The basketball like all competition is not unethical. It’s
reasonable that winners be rewarded, even if their vitories have an element of
chance; this is the essence of a game; but the allure of winning can drive some
competitors to unethical behaviour. There are many forms of unethical behavior starting from
players and referees all the way to the media and fans. At first, we need to
clarify what the fair play means, as a synonym to ethics in sport. In sport
fair play “means using only tactics that are in accord with the spirit of the
sport”. Unfortunately, many athletes do not follow this fair play rules to
achieve the victory, but use other unfair methods, sometimes “dubious but
legal, sometimes illegal. Not only rules are important in basketball, but also
values and morals. It is essential for the coaches to teach their athletes what
behavior is good and fair, because people have different values, and some of
them cannot even distinguish between what is good and what is bad.
